Christmas in Notting Hill
If Hugh was Becks…
U.S.-based Georgia is off to London for Christmas to visit her sister, Lizzie, who is in a serious relationship with Henry. Now, here’s where you have to begin to suspend belief a bit - Georgia has no idea that her sister’s boyfriend is the brother of a David Beckham-esque footballer. I can maybe understand her not knowing what a Christmas cracker is, but to not know that your sister - who she is ostensibly close with - is dating the brother of a famous footballer… that’s a stretch.
This is very much a case of re-writing Hugh and Julia’s classic rom-com for Christmas, complete with recreated scenes and almost verbatim dialogue, and for the most part it works!
Ok, so he bumps into her and breaks an ornament instead of spilling a coffee, and then invites her back to his (parents’) nearby house to clean up… they spend time on park benches trying to avoid paparazzi… and Horse & Hound #iykyk makes an appearance. But apparently the loose IP rules stopped at not being able to use “The British Museum” in the script, substituting for “The Museum of Britain,” which… ok, I’m not going to get into the semantics of how that would have very different collections. But I digress…
Some high points:
Describing the classic British pantomime as, “imagine if the Rocky Horror Picture Show had a baby with a Disney movie, and half the cast was dressed in drag.” He’s not wrong.
Rattling off a list of exes named Dean, Jess, and Tristan - someone is a Gilmore Girls fan, I see you, Alex Yonks! (#TeamLogan)
Overall surprisingly enjoyable - an easy watch full of London Christmas traditions.
Classic Christmas tropes:
Pantomime
Family drama
Family traditions
Christmas carnival/market
