A Heidelberg Holiday
German-ish Christmas Market
First we had Joyeux Noel try to sell a French village Christmas market this season, and now we have the German version. This was moderately better, but still not amazing.
Heidi Heidelberg makes handblown glass ornaments and has secured a last-minute spot to sell them at the Heidelberg Christmas market. Thus kicking off what is basically a 90-minute spot for the Heidelberg Tourism Board.
Unlike Christmas in Vienna (scored 7/10) which also involved a Christmas market, this one just wasn’t quite there. I am grateful that the storyline was better than the aforementioned French-set movie.
Overall the romantic plot was decent - seemed a tad more realistic than some than make the cut. But this seemed more like a case for visiting Heidelberg.
The hard part about these European-set movies is that the audience is expected to buy that these summer filming versions of classic European Christmas markets is the real thing, but there just isn’t enough there to draw me in. They just seem so… small. Which, in reality, they’re not.
Ginna Claire Mason is a bright spot in this one - and I recommend watching her in 2022’s A Holiday Spectacular. Not super Christmassy and totally different to this movie, it was an enjoyable period piece last year.
