The Most Colourful Time of the Year (2022)

As exciting as greyscale can be…not exciting

Michelle is a widowed single mother and optometrist; Ryan is her daughter’s colourblind (not a euphemism) elementary school teacher.

Utterly baffled by this movie. Halfway through the movie and Ryan has yet to show ANY interest in Michelle. Aloof to borderline rude, a 30-something PhD physics teacher has resigned himself to living in a world that exists only in grayscale, even as she works to bring colour into his life - double entendre intended.

Though he doesn’t really factor in too much - the complicating former boyfriend seems like such a skeezeball. As IF he’s believable as an alternative!

I think the best part of this movie is that I was forced to google “Achromatopsia.” Turns out, it’s not easily fixable by some fancy glasses. Nope. This would be more accurate if Ryan was portrayed as totally blind - given how impactful this particular affliction really is. I mean… if you can’t trust Hallmark to guarantee scientific accuracy, what is the world coming to?!? 😂 <- tears are real.

Aside: wondering how I recognize the lead - Katrina Bowden - enter IMBD - she was on 30 Rock for 99 episodes. And now… this. What’s a gal gotta do to get some of that Lorne Michaels magic?!?

Classic Christmas movie tropes:

  1. “Scrooge” who needs to understand the meaning of Christmas

  2. Christmas tree lighting

  3. Carol concert

You’ll like this if…

  • You have nothing else to do and you have super low expectations for Hallmark movies. Don’t judge them all by this one. I promise, they can be so much better.

SCORE: 2/10
