‘Tis The Season To Be Merry
‘cause her name is Merry! Clever. Not “Mary.” which would also be Christmassy.
Laney Boggs is all grown up! This is what happens when she doesn’t marry Zack Siler straight out of high school, and pivots from art to writing.
Merry is Hallmark Carrie Bradshaw - a “single professional dating expert with an imaginary fiancé,” and joins her friend, Darlene, on a trip to the ol’ hometown (shoutout to Winnipeg standing in for Vermont for the second time in reviews this year, after We Wish You A Married Christmas).
Adam (Darlene’s brother) is home taking a break from life as an aid worker and trying to convince his parents that what he really wants is to take over the family Christmas tree farm and gift store.
Finally! A character in one of these movies asking the important questions! Why do people wait until a few days before Christmas to get & decorate a tree?!? That part never rings true to me in these movies.
While they start out as adversaries (in the lightest sense of the word), Merry and adam quickly realize that they’re more compatible than they’d thought. Bonus of two more mini-romances rounding out the main characters.
Turns out Laney Boggs was alright in the end, despite the lack of kidney-shaped pools in Vermont.
SCORE: 5/10
