An Unexpected Christmas
I’ll tell you what WAS expected…
Jamie (Tyler Hynes) is a political speechwriter who somehow has time to chat with his mom mid-morning on a workday. [Editor’s Note: I’ve watched The West Wing MANY times through, and there is no way in hell this is at all realistic.]
Emily (Bethany Joy Lenz) is Jamie’s ex-girlfriend, but he never told his family that they broke up.
Points for having an LGBTQ supporting character, and one that isn’t some kind of caricature.
Jamie is honestly the WORST! He dumped his professionally successful girlfriend and tried to convince himself that it was so that she could focus on her career and not be held back by him.
He then spends the whole movie as “that” guy - the one who can’t seem to figure out what he wants for himself but is just nice enough to Emily to give her a glimmer of hope that he might still want to be with her.
So much potential for a movie where the woman rejected the dopey dude… but this is Hallmark.
Hap-Hap-Happiest Scene:
Blink-and-you-miss-is cameo by Hallstar Andrew Walker, who always makes me think of a WWII soldier. Something about his cheekbones.
Wait! Why do I recognize that person?
Bethany Joy Lenz did almost 200 episodes of One Tree Hill back in the day, as well as a stint on Dexter.
SCORE: 4/10
