Operation Christmas Drop

Christmas in the Tropics

  • Rom-com set around the actual Operation Christmas Drop completed by U.S., Australian, and Japanese armed forces every year to deliver goods to remote islands, which has been happening since the first drop in 1951!

  • Romance blooms, obvs, between the congressional aide/beancounter (Erica) sent to evaluate the base’s operations for efficiencies, and Andy, aka “Claus,” the local Air Force Captain who coordinates and leads the Drop, as he demonstrates the importance of the mission and convinces her why the base shouldn’t be closed.

  • A feel-good movie for sure, with absolutely stunning location shots from Guam, and the idea of Christmas in a hot climate totally takes me back to my youth. Santa on a camel, anyone?

Hap-Hap-Happiest Scene:

  • Christmas, sand, and palm trees. It’s all good.

Wait! Why do I recognize that person?

  • Alexander Ludwig (Claws) was in The Hunger Games and Vikings.

  • Kat Graham (Erica) was a longtime star of The Vampire Diaries. Maybe for next year, her and Nina Dobrev can film some sort of alternate universe vampire Christmas movie (Netflix - call me!)

SCORE: 7/10

Tell me more!

Erica is a congressional assistant in Washington, DC. She is tasked with investigating a US Air Force base in Guam with the intention of finding a reason to recommend its closure. Andrew is an Air Force captain, and he is chosen to show her around the USAF base and convince her that it should remain open.

The base has a yearly tradition of airlifting goods to the small islands of Micronesia for Christmas. Andrew shows Erica around the base and various islands and demonstrates that the tradition is worthwhile and the base should not be closed. Romance between Erica and Andrew blooms during these events.
