Haul Out The Holly

When the HOA comes to play

Emily breaks up with her boyfriend and heads home to Evergreen Lane, home of ALL. THE. CHRISTMAS. When her parents declare that they’re “taking their talents to South Beach,” Emily is left to deal solo with her childhood friend Jared in his role as President of the local HOA with a telephone book worth of Christmas decor-related requirements for all local homes. Wouldn’t you know it, but they rekindle their childhood love, helped in no small part by the neighbours who do everything they can to encourage the reconnection.

As a former HOA Prez myself, let me tell you that this movie spoke to me. Deeply. Like, taking notes to figure out if I could ever get away with enforcing these kind of intense decorating requirements on my neighbours (because hello there, Griswold inclination), while also never wanting to serve in that role ever again.

This movie is predicated on a community that goes ALL OUT for Christmas, so naturally this movie has a bit of everything:

  • Nickelback & Creed jokes

  • Snowmen contest

  • Carolling

  • Santa

  • White elephant gift exchange

  • Snowball fight

  • OTT decorating

  • References to classic Christmas movies

  • Melissa Peterson - Reba alumna (and if you haven’t seen that show, you are missing our!)

SCORE: 7/10
